How to Manage Multiple Cities in Strategy Games

Expanding to a second or third city? Learn how to balance production, defense, and troops across a multi-city empire without spreading yourself too thin.

Updated June 14, 2026

Expanding from one city to several is where a kingdom-war game opens up — and where a lot of players overextend and get farmed. This guide covers when to expand, how to specialize your cities, and how to manage them all without burning out.

When to build a second city

The temptation is to expand the moment you can. Resist it. A second city is only an asset if you can defend it — otherwise it’s a free target that hands resources to raiders. Expand when:

  • Your capital has stable, surplus production.
  • You have a standing army big enough to defend both locations or reinforce quickly.
  • You’re in an active alliance that can back you up.

Specialize your cities

Don’t make every city a clone. Specialization is more efficient:

  • A capital / military hub — your biggest army, best walls, and core research.
  • Resource cities — tuned for production, feeding your empire’s economy.
  • Forward bases — positioned near contested territory for fast strikes and reinforcement.
Defense first
A specialized resource city still needs enough defense (and a protected reserve) to survive a raid. An undefended economy city is just a snack for your neighbors.

Managing the load without burning out

More cities means more to check on. Keep it sane:

  • Queue upgrades and training across cities when you log in, so they work while you’re away.
  • Keep food positive in every city — starvation doesn’t care which city it hits.
  • Don’t spread so wide you can’t defend the edges. Width you can’t hold is weakness.

Put it into practice

Prestige: Kingdom War is built around multi-city empires on a shared 600×600 map, so these decisions are front and center. Pair this with our city building guide for build order and the resource management guide for keeping it all fed. New to the genre? Start with the kingdom strategy guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I build a second city in a strategy game?

Once your first city has stable production and a standing army to defend it. Expanding too early gives you an undefended target. In Prestige: Kingdom War, secure your capital’s economy and defense first, then expand.
