4X — eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate — is strategy at its most demanding, and mobile finally has games that deliver it. Here are the best 4X games on mobile in 2026, ranked by depth, fairness, and how much they respect your time.
What counts as real 4X
- ▸Expansion that matters — multiple cities or territories you manage.
- ▸An economy with trade-offs that shapes what you can field.
- ▸Conflict over a shared map, where extermination has stakes.
- ▸Tech or progression trees rewarding long-term planning.
Mobile 4X splits into two kinds of game. Turn-based 4X (Polytopia, Civilization, Unciv) gives you a fresh map each match, against the AI or friends. Strategy MMOs (Prestige, Rise of Kingdoms, Call of Dragons) run in real time on one map that never resets, so the rivals you exterminate are other players. Pick the kind first; the table below shows which is which.

The picks
1. Prestige: Kingdom War — best 4X on a persistent world
The full 4X loop on one shared world. You start with a single city on a 600×600 map, scout and expand by taking oases and forts, and add branch cities as your title rises, up to six. The economy runs on Wood, Stone, Iron and Food, and every troop eats Food each hour, so an army you can’t feed starves. Eleven technologies apply across all your cities. The map moves in real time, but battles play out turn by turn and you can give orders as they run. Alliances add their own cities, 41 shrines to hold and 48-hour wars.

It’s free to play. Troops are never sold, and VIP adds income and daily rewards, not attack or defense; the shop does sell speed-ups, resources, chests and keys. It’s inspired by Haypi Kingdom and isn’t a turn-based 4X: the world keeps moving while you’re offline, so you’ll want to check in each day.
2. The Battle of Polytopia — best pure 4X
A brilliant turn-based 4X built around short, complete games. Each match generates a new map, so there’s no persistent world, but it’s endlessly replayable against the AI or friends. It’s free to download; extra tribes are optional one-time purchases, with no ads or subscription on its store listings.
3. Civilization VI — deepest turn-based 4X
The full Civilization VI on a phone or tablet: districts, wonders, religion and diplomacy across long campaigns. The download is a 60-turn free trial; finishing a game means a one-time unlock, and the expansions are sold separately. The iOS version hasn’t been updated since May 2024.
4. Unciv — best free 4X on Android
An open-source remake of Civilization V’s rules, free with no ads and no purchases. It’s Android only on mobile. An iPhone app with a similar name says on its own listing that it isn’t an official Unciv release.
5. Civilization VII — best for Apple Arcade subscribers
Firaxis’s latest Civilization came to iPhone and iPad through Apple Arcade in February 2026. It’s included with the subscription, with no separate purchase, but there’s no Android version and it doesn’t get the PC game’s DLC.
6. Rise of Kingdoms — biggest real-time 4X
A large real-time strategy MMO with exploration, commanders and alliance territory on one huge map per kingdom. It’s free with in-app purchases, and its Google Play listing also shows ads.
7. Call of Dragons — best 3D battlefield
A fantasy strategy MMO in the same mould as Rise of Kingdoms, with 3D terrain that shapes battles and flying units that cross mountains and rivers. Free with in-app purchases.
Bottom line
If you want 4X matches you can finish, start with Polytopia. If you want an empire that keeps going and rivals who are real people, play a persistent-world game. See our best 4X games on Android and best strategy MMORPG on mobile, or the Prestige guides to see how its systems work.
