How to Avoid Troop Starvation

Letting food hit zero starves your army — the most avoidable disaster in kingdom-war games. Learn how to keep production ahead of consumption and never lose troops to hunger.

Updated June 14, 2026

Losing an army to enemies is part of the game. Losing one to a number you forgot to check is just painful. In most kingdom-war games — Prestige: Kingdom War included — troops eat, and if food hits zero they starve and die. Here’s how to make sure that never happens to you.

How starvation works

Your army consumes food every hour. Your farms produce food every hour. What matters is the net rate. As your army grows, consumption climbs — and at some point it can outpace production, turning your net food rate negative. Once your stored food runs out, troops start dying until the numbers balance. It’s entirely preventable.

How to prevent it

  • Watch your net food rate, not just your stockpile. A big stockpile draining fast is a warning, not safety.
  • Scale food production ahead of your army. Upgrade farms before you train a big batch of troops, not after.
  • Never log off with negative food. If your rate is negative, fix it — upgrade farms, disband excess, or station troops elsewhere — before you leave.
  • Account for troops coming home. Reinforcements and returning armies add to your food bill when they arrive.
The quick check
Before you close the game: is my net food positive? If yes, you’re safe. If no, fix it now. That ten-second habit saves entire armies.

If it’s already happening

Act fast: upgrade or build more food production, trade for food at the market if your game allows it, or temporarily reduce your army. The sooner your net rate goes positive, the sooner the bleeding stops.

The bigger picture

Food is one part of a healthy economy. For the full system — balancing all four resources, avoiding overflow, and protecting a reserve — see the resource management guide, and for build order, the city building guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you stop troops from starving in strategy games?

Keep food production ahead of your army’s consumption. Scale up food buildings before training large batches of troops, watch your net food rate (it can go negative as your army grows), and never leave it negative while you’re away.
