City Building Strategy Guide

What to upgrade first in a kingdom strategy game. A proven build order that accelerates your growth instead of spreading upgrades thin and stalling.

Updated June 14, 2026

New players spread upgrades evenly across their city and stall out. Strong players prioritize ruthlessly and pull ahead. This guide lays out a proven build order for kingdom-war games and explains why each step comes when it does.

Why build order matters

Every upgrade competes for the same resources and build queue. Spend them in the wrong order and you bottleneck yourself — building troops you can’t feed, or production you can’t store. The right order compounds: each step makes the next one faster.

The build order

  • 1. Main building / town hall first. It usually caps your population, which limits how much of everything else you can run. Keep it leveling constantly.
  • 2. Storage next. Stops you bleeding resources to overflow every time you collect.
  • 3. Food production. Scale it ahead of your army so you never risk starvation.
  • 4. Balanced resource buildings. Keep wood, stone, and iron at similar levels for steady, usable income.
  • 5. Barracks and military. Higher levels train troops faster — but only once your economy can sustain an army.
  • 6. Technology / research. Permanent empire-wide bonuses that pay off over the whole game.
  • 7. Walls and defense. Traps and turrets to make yourself an unappealing target.
The one-line version
Population, then storage, then food, then balanced economy, then military. Get those in order and you’ll out-grow players who rushed troops they can’t feed.

Don’t rush military

The most common early mistake is rushing barracks and troops before the economy can support them. An army you can’t feed starves; an army you can’t replace dies once and ends your momentum. Build the economic base first — the military comes faster once it’s there.

Put it into practice

Prestige: Kingdom War follows this structure closely — your main building gates population, storage caps your resources, and crop feeds your troops. Pair this with the resource management guide, and once you’re ready to grow, the multiple cities guide. New here? Start with the kingdom strategy guide.
